A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block visible behind helped us verify the footage.

Our team is analyzing images and video circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to verify the site from which the images originated relied on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.

Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the footage were taken.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
