Israelis have gathered throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.

The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership delayed state commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the plan.

A prominent delegate familiar with the discussions indicated that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source explained the morning session finished without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He noted that the talks are "challenging and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Key Issues in Discussions

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance deliveries
  • Post-war governance of the area

Public Feeling

In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, young a woman - whose sibling survived the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until all the hostages come back none of us will be secure."

"When we see everyone home again, we can relax anew. Then we can commence recover," she continued.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now consistently show that about seventy percent of the population desire the hostilities to finish in as payment for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Situation

At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.

From there, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the main city, attacks were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side neighborhood, sector and zone areas and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.

"When the dusk falls, the anxiety comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, described.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had accepted the bodies of six people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the south region of Khan Younis said another two dead people had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli forces while looking for help to the south, medics said.

The region's health ministry said a significant number of the {territ
