A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country struggling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Authorities reported the 40-year-old media personality was accosted by three suspects, with one opened fire on him before fleeing on foot.

The purpose behind the incident has not been established and no arrests have taken place, police said.

Details of the Attack

Police indicated that Stock was targeted as he was exiting a building near the Carlton Centre.

He had devoted time at the building supervising the installation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, it was reported.

"Authorities believe the man was confronted by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," authorities confirmed.

Security camera video reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what resembled a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries on the opposite side of the road.

It was further revealed that Stock had an weapon on his person and nothing was taken during the incident.

Crucial forensic evidence, like bullet casings, were recovered from the scene.

Appeal for Witnesses

Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have have information to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the shooting, and police have been attempting to locate them to find their location," added an official.

Family and Public Reaction

His sister, a close relative, expressed the loved ones are reeling to process his death.

"I am devastated. I am shattered," were her words.
"We know he was a voice for many people. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were willing to discuss. This is a tremendous loss."

She urged the citizens to avoid sharing graphic images from the incident, noting this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's three sons.

Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that aired on a South African TV network.

Apart from his work in broadcasting, Stock was active in various commercial activities, including private security, offering high-level security services and protecting major functions across South Africa.

He was also said to be engaged in building administration and assisted with property reclaimations.

His death has caused national trauma and prompted an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the authorities and political parties.

A government minister remarked he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's murder.

"He was forthright without fear or favour. He even criticized me and my policies as a public official. He was a pure example of who we should be," he stated.

A public representative stated the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a shock for all South Africans".

A broadcasting director noted that "Stock was more than just a face of a reality series. He was a talented storyteller, a passionate music lover and a warm soul who brought happiness and vitality to every appearance. His commitment to his craft left an lasting impression."

In a communication, the network he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his presence, approachability and quick humor, adding that his memory "will endure".
