Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world laments the passing to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
