The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

As I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a football he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Arrival

That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to victory and being named best player.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to temper his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions

With his current club, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
