This Limited-Edition Pokémon Card Seeks to Be Super Effective On Speculators

Marking the launch of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting collaboration is underway. The Pokémon Company alongside London's Natural History Museum are opening a pop-up shop stocked with special merchandise. Fans will find products like plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all inspired by the institution's theme. The big draw, however, will be a limited-edition Pikachu card, offered as a gift with purchase at the pop-up. The store will operate both the physical location to online from January 26 to April 19.

The Book Behind the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated volume packed with beautiful illustrations depicting Pokémon in their natural habitats. The concept like the kind of research a Pokémon Professor might publish after trainers submit their data, alternatively what Charles Darwin might have created if the Galapagos were populated by flying-types rather than finches. A key appeal stems from the book's serious approach, treating Pokémon as worthy of scientific study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara together with illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess doctorate degrees in ecology and behavioral science.

What Makes This Special Card Different

The company regularly for The Pokémon Company to release promos for major tournaments and crossover partnerships. Many such promotional cards often feature the famous electric rodent who serves as the franchise mascot. What distinguishes this new museum card is its unusually large dimensions. Although exact measurements have not been publicly disclosed, its distribution will certainly be highly restricted, with fans limited to only a single card with each transaction.

Curbing Speculator Activity

According to a company announcement, some of the merchandise may also be available outside the museum walls. However, a wider release is slated for specific stores in the UK. Importantly, collectors cannot purchase this promo via the official web shop. While reseller interest is inevitable, it appears they're going to have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities this time around. For those feeling left out, consider an alternative like Pokémon Fossil exhibit coming to the Windy City in the coming months.

"Every penny from purchases from the museum store and its online store, including these items, go toward the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. That encompasses the efforts of 400 scientists who are conducting studies and finding answers to the planetary emergency," the statement says.
